Let's Talk About Taylor Jenkins Reid

Updated: Oct 27, 2021

Review of Daisy Jones and the Six and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

By Ava Shaffer

Over the past year, Taylor Jenkins Reid has quickly made her way onto my list of favorite authors. I read Daisy Jones and the Six first, and fell in love with it. After such a fantastic book I couldn't help but build Taylor Jenkins Reid up in my head as this wonderfully talented writer who could do no wrong. That's why I was hesitant to read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. I had loved her one book so much, I didn't want to be disappointed if another wasn't as good. Thankfully, that wasn't the case. In fact, I now have an even higher view on Taylor Jenkins Reid because both of her books left me in tears.

Daisy Jones and the Six

I can’t articulate how much I adore this book. The mock-documentary style is so unique, and despite having such an unconventional approach to storytelling you don’t miss any of the details. The band feels real and the characters live so vividly in your mind that it’s hard to believe they’re not real musicians living in our world today. The writing was poetic & lyrical while still managing to maintain the grit and grime associated with rock 'n roll. I devoured this book in 2 days, and already I want to read it again. This story was so raw and heartbreaking, you could tell how much love and passion was put into it.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo

This is now one of my favorite books. I loved how intricate and complex the characters were, and reading it felt like watching an old film. I felt like it was impossible to not fall in love with Evelyn Hugo. This story definitely took an unexpected twist for me, which was delighting and refreshing to read. Although I didn't enjoy the frame story of this as much as I did with Daisy Jones, I was still very engrossed in the story and couldn't put the book down. Vibrant and heartwarming, I enjoyed this book from start to finish.

So what's next?

Malibu Rising is Taylor Jenkins Reid's newest book, which will be released on March 4, 2021. It is set in the 80s in a beach town, which already sounds terrific to me. I am beyond excited to delve deep into this story and see if it lives up to the incredibly high standard set by her other book.
