In this magical and moving story from best-selling author TJ Klune, readers follow the lives of a reimagined Pinocchio, his son Vic, Rambo the anxious rumba, bloodthirsty Nurse Ratched, and HAP (Hysterically Angry Puppet).
“Humanity is awful, angry, and violent. But we are also magical and musical. We dance. We sing. We create. We live and laugh and rage and cry and despair and hope. We are a bundle of contradictions without rhyme or reason. And there is no one like us in all the universe.”
In The Lives of Puppets is by far the best audiobook I have ever read. It was incredibly immersive, hilarious, and heartwarming– everything I expect from a TJ Klune book. The narrator, Daniel Hening, deserves the audiobook equivalent of an Oscar for his performance in this book. He had the perfect voices for this eclectic and loveable cast of characters, especially Rambo the anxious rumba <3
TJ Klune has such a knack for creating the most tender stories with character and dialogue at the heart of it all. I really had no clue what this book was going into it, I just know I’ve loved all of Klune’s other books. I was definitely surprised by some parts (mainly descriptions of death and robot orgies) because I thought this would be middle grade like House In The Cerulean Sea and Under The Whispering Door. But I’m super glad this went in the direction it did! TJ Klune is such a fantastic writer and getting to see him take on a slightly more mature voice made this book really interesting. Sometimes there was no plot just good characters and heartwarming dialogue, and that’s my favorite kind of book!
